Type of employment: Training
Type of employment: Full-time
Apprenticeship period: 3 years

Prerequisites

To become a metalworker, you should fulfill the following requirements:

  • Interest in learning a skilled trade
  • Spatial imagination
  • Enjoy working with metals
  • Accuracy

Description

Metalworkers get to know all the tools, machines and equipment used in metalworking and acquire precise knowledge of materials and auxiliary materials, their properties, possible uses and processing options. They learn how to read and use technical documents (construction drawings and plans, technical descriptions and instructions) and also make their own sketches of workpieces and constructions.

The central area of training is the manual and mechanical shaping and processing of metal workpieces. Manual metalworking techniques primarily include measuring, marking out, filing, sawing, drilling, thread cutting, countersinking, grinding and chiseling as well as heat treatment and sheet metal working; turning and milling as well as mechanical sheet metal working dominate the mechanical processes.
Fastening and joining techniques (screwing, riveting, soldering, gluing) are an important part of the training. The most important joining technique is welding, whereby two metal parts are fused together by applying heat to the joints. Metal technicians learn various welding techniques such as electric welding (arc welding) and inert gas welding (gas fusion welding).
